The venerable storage brand is out of the picture for good.

According to several media reports, parent company Kioxia has decided to discontinue the nearly 40-year-old Plextor storage brand.

The Plextor brand was originally owned by Plextor Inc. a 100% subsidiary of Japanese company Shinano Kenshi Corp. formerly known as TEXEL, which launched its first CD-ROM drive in 1989 and since then has expanded its product line to include flash memory products, DVD/CD media, Blu-ray discs, and other products. In 1994, TEXEL changed its name to Plextor.

In 2008, Shinano Kenshi transferred the optical disk drive business to Taiwan's Lite-On Electronics (a subsidiary of the Lite-On Group) for manufacturing and sales.

Later in 2010, the Plextor brand was licensed to Philips & Lite-On Digital Solutions Corporation (PLDS), a subsidiary of Lite-On Technology Corporation, which was originally a joint venture between Philips and BenQ Telecom in Taiwan, but in 2006, Kenshi acquired BenQ's equity in the joint venture. (later in 2006, Chien Hsing Electronics acquired BenQ Dentsu's original stake in the joint venture and changed its name), and Lite-On Technology introduced the brand name of Pucotech into the mainland Chinese market for sale.

In 2019, Toshiba announced that it had acquired Lite-On's solid-state storage (SSD) business unit for a transaction price of $165 million, and the Plextor brand was officially brought under Toshiba's umbrella. The Plextor brand is known for its low-priced yet high-performance products. Toshiba said of the acquisition that it would enable it to meet the growing demand for SSDs in PCs and data centers.

Later, with Toshiba Storage's official name change effective October 1 of the same year, the brand came back under Armor Man.
